Billy Batson's parents died when he was a mere child. He was separated from his sister, Mary, and was left in the care of his uncle Ebenezer, half-brother of his father. Sadly, Ebenezer stole Billy's trust fund which was meant to help raise him and threw the child out of his home, leaving him penniless and homeless. Barely living on the low salary of a newsboy, Billy lived a pitiful life in Fawcett City, sleeping in subway terminals. A mysterious stranger, one night, convinced Billy to follow him deep into the subway tunnels. The stranger was later revealed to be the spirit of his dead father acting on orders of a higher being, a wizard named Shazam.

Using a train decorated in hieroglyphs and mystic runes Billy and 'the mysterious stranger' rode deep into the Earth, reaching a cavern that held statues epitomising the seven deadly enemies of man: pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed and sloth. In the cavern awaiting Billy's arrival was the wizard Shazam, a champion of mankind for thousands of years. The ancient wizard told Billy that he had chosen him to be his successor, a champion to follow in his footsteps and fight for good as the "strongest and mightiest man in the world--Captain Marvel!"

Shazam ordered Billy to speak his name. Billy spoke the name Shazam and was struck by a bolt of magic lightning, immediately transforming him into the adult superhero, Captain Marvel. He learned that all he had to do to transform into Captain Marvel and then back into Billy Batson was to say the name Shazam. Very soon after, the wizard Shazam died leaving Billy Batson to carry on his work as Captain Marvel.

Captain Marvel has many powers given to him by the wizard. The name Shazam is actually an acronym for legendary figures who agreed to give aspects of themselves to a willing subject. The figures and the powers given from them are as follows:

S - The wisdom of Solomon, giving Captain Marvel superhuman knowledge (exceptional photographic recall and mental acuity allowing him to recall everything he has ever learned, solve long equations instantaneously and make intuitive guesses based on limited data to the point his guesses are almost always correct), clairvoyance (an awareness of his circumstances that allows him to turn disadvantages into advantages), multilingualism (the ability to speak every language known to man) and hypnosis (the ability to hypnotize people)
H - The strength of Hercules, giving Captain Marvel superhuman strength (Captain Marvel is strong enough to lift at least 100,000 tons, he is able to effortlessly bend steel, punch through walls and lift massive objects. Marvel's strength is enough that he has fought beings such as Superman and Wonder Woman to a standstill.)
A - The stamina of Atlas, giving Captain Marvel superhuman endurance and self-sustenance (Captain Marvel does not need to eat, sleep or breathe and can survive unaided in space)
Z - The power of Zeus, giving Captain Marvel a resistance to weaker magic, an enhanced healing ability and the power of Zeus is the source of the magic lightning which transforms Billy Batson into Captain Marvel. This lightning, if Captain Marvel avoids it and allows it to hit an opponent, can be used as a weapon as well.
A - The courage of Achilles, giving Captain Marvel superhuman inner-strength/will. The courage of Achilles also adds to the power of the supernatural healing given by Zeus.
M - The speed of Mercury, giving Captain Marvel superhuman speed (not as fast as The Flash, but still exceeding Mach 10), the ability to fly and, only when in outer-space, the ability to travel at light speed.

The only thing that can defeat Captain Marvel is high-grade magic and, even then, it would take a considerable amount to fully defeat him. Even if he was fully defeated however, it is highly likely the gods and heroes who gave him their power would resurrect him.

[edit] Captain Marvel in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe

Many MK fans and even some DC fans were disappointed at the announcement of Captain Marvel, believing there to be better characters for the game. Some were also worried, as with Superman, that the character would be overpowered, but because of the great amounts of magic in the MK universe Captain Marvel isn't as powerful as he originally was, making him defeat-able.

Leading up to the game's release the character was advertised as Shazam. This is because Marvel Comics owns the trademark to the name Captain Marvel, meaning Midway or DC couldn't advertise the name. However, because DC Comics owns the copyright to the original character (who was created before Marvel Comics registered the trademark) the name can (and will) still be used for the character in the game, they just couldn't use it for advertising purposes.

[edit] Story

Captain Marvel facing off against Raiden.

Not much is known about Captain Marvel's story in the game. In the Kollectors Edition Komic, however, it is shown that Captain Marvel fights Raiden, implying the two are a part of each others storyline.
