The ninth game in the main Mortal Kombat series, simply titled Mortal Kombat. It is also referred to as Mortal Kombat 9 to distinguish from the original Mortal Kombat game and the series in general. It was released on May 19th, 2001 in North America. It is the first 2.5D Mortal Kombat game and the first one to have 2D gameplay since Mortal Kombat Trilogy.
The game plays like Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, but in 2D and much more violence. Each character has at least two fatalities and a babality. Various stages also have stage fatalities. New to the series is the X-Ray attack, a move that show's the opponents bones being smashed. Enhanced attacks are also new. They are enhanced versions of that character's special moves. Both X-Ray attacks and enhanced attacks use up the character's meter.
This game offers Story Mode, which is a story-telling mode of the game and you use various characters as you go along. The game also has Challenge Tower, a mode made of various missions for various characters. Test Your Might and Test Your Sight return as well. In addition, Test Your Luck and Test Your Strike are also added.
Taking from the events of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. Taven's victory over Blaze had a grave consequence. Taven's newfound power had syphioned from him and onto Shao Kahn. With this power, Kahn went on to defeat all who faced him and he would fight and defeat Raiden and is about to lay claim to all of the realms. But while he was taking his time beating a defeated Raiden and was about to finish him, Raiden used what was left of his own amulet to reset the time of the events and eventually went back to the time of the 10th generation Mortal Kombat tournament in Earthrealm when it was about to begin. There Raiden with his allies hope to prevent Armageddon long before it transpires.
