Kung Lao is the ancestor of the legendary shaolin fighting monk of the same name who fought in the Mortal Kombat tournament 500 years ago.
When he found out that Liu Kang was killed by the deadly alliance, he swore revenge on Shang Tsung, he also helped Raiden fight against the alliance.
