The ninth game in the main Mortal Kombat series, simply titled Mortal Kombat. It is also referred to as Mortal Kombat 9 to distinguish from the original Mortal Kombat game and the series in general. It is to be released on May 19th, 2001 in North America. It is the first 2.5D Mortal Kombat game and the first one to have 2D gameplay since Mortal Kombat Trilogy.
The game plays like Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, but in 2D and much more violence. Each character has at least two fatalities, a brutality and a babality. New to the series is the X-Ray attack, a move that show's the opponents bones being smashed. Enhanced attacks are also new. They are enhanced versions of that character's special moves. Both X-Ray attacks and enhanced attacks use up the character's meter.
